Объединение стран-членов Европейского союза (см. European Union) на основе единой валюты и координации денежно-кредитной политики. Создание ЭВС - завершающий этап интеграционного процесса в Европе. Его начало было положено Маастрихским договором 1991 г., в котором были определены четкие критерии, которым должны были соответсвовать члены Союза: уровень инфляции ниже 3%, дефицит государственного бюджета не более 3% ВВП, государственный долг не более 6% ВВП. В 1998 г. одиннадцать из пятнадцати стран Евросоюза (кроме Норвегии, Греции, Швеции и Великобритании) объединились в валютный союз и учредили Центральный европейский банк. В 1999 г. была введена единая валюта евро как средство безналичных расчетов, а в 2002 г. - в качестве средства обращения внутри ЕС, что завершило процесс интеграции.
